The northern 40 or so miles of the Coulee Corridor on State Route 155 travel across one of the largest Indian reservations in Washington State. The Confederated Tribes of Colville Reservation lands encompass 2,187 square miles.
Established by an executive order in 1872, today the Reservation is home to a dozen tribes. The Reservation and its central community Nespelem is best known as the final home and resting place of Chief Joseph, the revered Chief of the Nez Perce Tribe.
They are an important part of the expansive Nez Perce National Historic Park with sites in Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Montana. You can learn more about the history of the tribes of the Colville at the Tribal Museum in the town of Coulee Dam, on the Colville Reservation just across from the Grand Coulee Dam.
