Sultan

Continuing east from Monroe, you enter Sultan, located at the confluence of the Sultan and Skykomish Rivers. The scenic beauty of the Sultan area is unsurpassed with breath-taking views of the Cascades and rivers. Sultan was named after a local Indian Chief "Sultan John" who was the leader of the tribe of Indians who lived along the banks of the Skykomish River. White settlers were unable to pronounce his real name, Tseultd, so they renamed him Sultan and added John for good measure. While the Sultan area has its roots in logging, mining and farming, today Sultan is known for its excellent salmon and steelhead fishing, hiking, camping and river rafting. Just 16 miles from Sultan, you will find Spada Lake, a huge reservoir that is the principal source of drinking water for two-thirds of Snohomish County. You can hike, picnic, fish, and boat in the Sultan Basin area. Visitors will also enjoy the annual Sultan Summer Shindig in July and the Music in the Park entertainment series.
